How to Beat the Most Persistent Weed of All – Purple Nutsedge (Nutgrass)

Almost every grower knows it- and it is even stated explicitly in official publications of Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture: Purple Nutsedge is considered the world’s most problematic weed. So how do you deal with such a persistent opponent? Here’s what you need to know.

There are few growers who are unfamiliar with Purple Nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), commonly known in Israel as Sa’ida. This perennial weed is one of the most widespread species in Israel and around the world and is regarded as one of the most difficult weeds to control. Before discussing how to manage it, here are a few important facts about this challenging pest.

What You Need to Know About Purple Nutsedge

There are several reasons why this seemingly harmless weed has earned such a notorious reputation.

First, it competes aggressively with crops for essential resources such as water, nutrients, and space. In addition, it releases allelopathic compounds– natural chemicals that suppress the germination and growth of neighboring plants, allowing it to dominate its environment. Simply by establishing itself in a field, Purple Nutsedge can significantly reduce crop performance and, in severe infestations, devastate entire fields.

Beneath the soil surface lies the real challenge. Purple Nutsedge develops an extensive network of underground rhizomes that produce numerous tubers. These tubers are responsible for the weed’s rapid spread and vigorous regrowth. They are also the most difficult part of the plant to eliminate, enabling it to return repeatedly even after removal.

Even its common Hebrew nickname, Sa’ida, reflects its remarkable persistence. The name is believed to originate from the Arabic word As-Su’ada, meaning “Good morning”. According to popular folklore, the weed earned this nickname because after a farmer spends an entire day removing it from the field, it reappears the very next morning- as if mockingly saying, “Good morning, I’m back”.

So, is it actually possible to get rid of it?

How to Control Purple Nutsedge

The short answer is yes. Purple Nutsedge can be effectively managed- but not with a single “magic solution”. Successful control requires a consistent, long-term management strategy.

An effective weed management program should combine cultural practices such as cultivation, plowing, and mechanical weeding, performed regularly throughout the season. However, these methods alone are usually insufficient, as they often fail to destroy all underground tubers and may even spread them throughout the field.

For this reason, cultural practices should be combined with appropriate herbicides. True to its reputation, Purple Nutsedge has developed tolerance to many commonly used herbicides, making it essential to select products with proven efficacy against this particularly difficult weed.

Frontier Optima by BASF, distributed by Agrica, is a pre-emergence herbicide from the chloroacetamide group that has demonstrated excellent control of a wide range of troublesome weeds, including Purple Nutsedge. The product primarily prevents weed emergence and is therefore recommended for application before weeds emerge. However, in the case of Purple Nutsedge, it has also demonstrated effective control after emergence.

Frontier Optima is registered for use in peanuts, potatoes, corn, beans, sweet potatoes, and onions, with crop-specific application recommendations designed to maximize weed control while ensuring crop safety.

As mentioned, there is no one-time treatment that will eliminate Purple Nutsedge permanently. However, with persistence and a well-planned integrated approach that combines cultural practices with Frontier Optima, even the most stubborn weed can be transformed from a chronic problem into one that is effectively managed throughout the growing season.
